SSC JE 2026 Syllabus for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical: Paper-I and II exam pattern, negative marking and topic-wise syllabus as per official notice.

SSC JE 2026 Syllabus
Civil, Mechanical & Electrical – Paper-I & Paper-II Exam Pattern, Negative Marking and Topic-wise Syllabus
The SSC JE 2026 Syllabus is short on paper but deep in practice, and that catches a lot of diploma holders off guard. The Staff Selection Commission published the Junior Engineer Examination, 2026 notice on 2 September 2026, and Paper-I is already scheduled from 2 to 6 November 2026. If you are a Civil, Mechanical or Electrical aspirant from Hyderabad, Warangal, Vijayawada or Vizag, this is the page to keep open: the full exam pattern, the marking rules and the topic-wise syllabus for Paper-I and Paper-II, all taken from the official notice.
One thing worth knowing up front: the engineering questions are set at roughly diploma level for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical. So your polytechnic textbooks are still the best base. You do not need GATE-level depth, but you do need speed and clean basics.
SSC JE 2026 Exam Pattern (Paper-I & Paper-II)
The exam has two computer-based papers. Paper-I is a screening round. Paper-II is where your rank is decided.
Paper-I (Computer Based Examination)
| Subject | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 50 | 50 | 2 Hours |
| General Awareness | 50 | 50 | |
| General Engineering: Part-A Civil & Structural or Part-B Electrical or Part-C Mechanical (as per your post) | 100 | 100 | |
| Total | 200 | 200 | 2 Hours |
Paper-II (Computer Based Examination)
| Subject | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Engineering: Part-A Civil & Structural or Part-B Electrical or Part-C Mechanical (same branch as Paper-I) | 100 | 300 | 2 Hours |
Good to know: Questions come in Hindi and English. Candidates eligible for a scribe get 2 hours 40 minutes for each paper. The IS 456:2000 table and the Steam Table (where needed) are shown on screen, and an on-screen scientific calculator is available for the whole exam. No physical calculator or table is allowed inside the lab. The branch you chose in the application form cannot be changed.
SSC JE 2026 Negative Marking & Qualifying Marks
- Paper-I: 0.25 mark deducted for every wrong answer.
- Paper-II: 1 mark deducted for every wrong answer. Since Paper-II has 100 questions for 300 marks, each question works out to 3 marks, so a wrong guess costs you a third of a question.
- Minimum qualifying marks (both papers): UR 30%, OBC/EWS 25%, all other categories 20%.
- Paper-I is qualifying. Its normalized marks are used only to shortlist you, category-wise, for Paper-II.
- Final merit is based only on normalized Paper-II marks, plus your post preferences.
- Electrical vs Mechanical: Some posts are common to both branches, so SSC normalizes Electrical and Mechanical scores against each other.
- No re-checking: There is no re-evaluation of scores at any stage.

How to Prepare for SSC JE 2026
- Start with your diploma notes and standard textbooks. The level is diploma, so concepts matter more than tricky derivations.
- In Paper-II, a wrong answer costs 1 mark against 3 for a right one. Skip questions where you can’t narrow it down to two options.
- Civil aspirants should get comfortable reading IS 456:2000 tables on screen, since the table is provided during the exam.
- Take full-length mocks under a 2-hour timer and review every wrong answer the same day.
- Keep checking ssc.gov.in for Paper-I answer keys and the Paper-II schedule.
